Chapter 9

“I can’t stay here alone!” Amelia said. “I need someone to stand guard. I’m already such a wreck, I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep otherwise.”

She was still shaking, and he hated seeing her like that.

Caleb let out a heavy sigh. He didn’t blame her for not wanting to be alone. Admittedly, he didn’t like the idea of her being alone any more than she did. “I can stay on the sofa, but only until you fall asleep, and then I’ll have to go,” he offered. “I really shouldn’t stay in the same house without an escort, but I think this situation could be considered an emergency of sorts. If my daed found out, he’d take me out back of the barn for a talk for sure and for certain!”

“I’m sorry to put you in such a spot,” she said. “I wish I felt safe enough to be here alone, but whoever put blood all over my front door knows that I’m staying here, and decided to extend the warning to me here as well.”

“Don’t worry about it. Tomorrow, things will be better. We’ll get the supplies delivered, and we should have a good portion of the cleaning and repairs done by sundown, wouldn’t you think?”

The wind blew and the rain drummed against the tin roof like a brass band.

“If you’ll make us some kaffi, I’ll build a fire to take the chill out of the air. I think the temperature dropped about ten degrees since the sun went down.”

She went to the kitchen to busy her hands with making a pot of coffee, while she anticipated the warmth of a nice fire. She was a little hungry, but she feared her stomach would retaliate having even a small amount of food in it until after she calmed down. The constant loud cracks of thunder didn’t help any. She jumped every time, even though she anticipated it after the lightning strike.

She’d not felt safe most of her life, but now, she felt a total state of unrest. Though she missed her parents, they’d been like strangers, almost as if not related to her. An only child of Amish parents, they were always at odds, and even more-so with the community. Her mamm and daed had even seemed mismatched, but she struggled to remember why. They were quiet—except when they’d argued, thinking she couldn’t hear them.

What was it they would argue about?

If only she could remember the things she hadn’t wanted to, or even intended to block out. All she really knew was that her childhood home had never felt like home because of the tension there. There had always been an unknown source of strife between her parents, and perhaps the deaths of her parents and the man who’d hunted them had been the reason, but what was it that nagged at her so? Was she remembering things wrong?

She stood at the sink, staring blankly out at the swaying cornstalks, a shiver running through her as the lightning illuminated the cornfield.
